TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ferry Danang S. Baskoro, President Director of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferries, a state-owned seaport operator, stated that the company has suffered Rp 55 billion (US$5,64 million) loss in 2012 for operating pioneer ship.
"This year's loss was Rp 55 billion, lower than losses in the previous year which was Rp 66 billion," he said at the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry Office on Tuesday, May 7.
He stated that the losses was caused by higher operational cost compared to the profits.
"There are only few passengers, the main production cost is bigger than the subsidy,"Ferry explained.
However, Ferry confirmed that he is committed to keep operating pioneer ships.
"This has to keep going. Imagine if we do not provide services to Indonesia's outer islands, no one will visit the islands," he said. He also stated that the loss can be covered by the profit of other commercial ship.
In 2012, ASDP has Rp 159 billion profit, which was higher compared to the company's profits in 2011 of Rp 125 billion.
The ASDP is currently working on the permit to launch a new vessel, the KMP Portlink. The vessel is intended to serve the crowded Merak-Bakauheni route.
"The ship can carry at least 1000 passengers, 309 small vehicles, and 62 12-meter trucks," Ferry concluded.
