UNJ Lecturer Reports Jokowi's Son Kaesang Pangarep to KPK on Suspicion of Gratuity for Private Jet Ride

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta State University (UNJ) lecturer Ubedilah Badrun reported Kaesang Pangarep to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), alleging that President Joko Widodo's youngest son had received a gratification in the form of a Gulfstream G650ER aircraft facility to travel to the United States.
"Yesterday, I reported [him for] the use of a private jet or luxury lifestyle phenomenon as an event that confirmed the veracity of our report 2.5 years ago," Ubedilah said, referring to his previous report of Kaesang to the KPK on similar suspicions.
According to Ubedilah, Kaesang's lifestyle as the son of a president deserves to be scrutinized. Moreover, many of Kaesang's companies have gone bankrupt, raising questions about his ability to rent a private jet.
"The rent could cost several billion rupiah, or if it is his own plane, the price is close to Rp1.5 trillion," he said.
He hopes the KPK will summon Kaesang and investigate the source of funds for the private jet. "Was it a gift from a businessman or did he pay for it himself? He asked. "If it was a gratuity because of his father's position, then he could be charged with a criminal act of corruption."
Not the first report
This is not the first time Ubedilah has reported Kaesang to the KPK. In 2022, Ubedilah reported him and his older brother Gibran Rakabuming Raka, now the vice president-elect, on suspicion of money laundering involving a company with the initials PT SM.
PT SM is a company that was implicated in a forest clearing case in 2015. While the Ministry of Environment demanded Rp7.9 trillion in damages, the Supreme Court only awarded Rp78 billion.
At the time, Ubedilah suspected that Gibran and Kaesang had received Rp99.3 billion in two transactions, which were then used to buy shares worth Rp92 billion. However, the KPK stated that the report was deemed vague and not solid enough to proceed.
