Japan Ready to Share Waste Management Expertise with Jakarta

2 August 2024 11:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA delegation from Japan's Parliamentary Environmental Commission visited Jakarta's Recycle Center (JRC), a waste processing facility prioritizing household waste sorting, on Thursday, August 1, 2024. This visit aims to strengthen cooperation and ties between Japan and Indonesia in the field of environmental management, especially waste management.

Located in Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta, the JRC construction is the result of cooperation between the Jakarta Provincial Government and the Osaki City Government, Japan.

Asep Kuswanto, Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, expressed gratitude to the Osaki City Government for Japan's support in building the JRC. “We are very grateful to the Japanese Government, especially the contribution through the Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA, in helping to build infrastructure and develop a waste management system in Jakarta,” Asep in a written statement on Thursday, August 1.

He emphasized Jakarta's commitment to improving environmental management by adopting Japanese technology and expertise. He also hoped for the cooperation to be continued and expanded to other fields, such as handling air pollution and wastewater management.

“We see many opportunities to strengthen collaboration in various environmental sectors,” Asep added.

Shunsuke Mutai, Chairman of the Japanese Parliamentary Environmental Commission, highlighted the importance of decarbonization and waste reduction in reducing emissions. He expressed Japan's willingness to share knowledge with Jakarta to improve its environmental performance.

“We are impressed with the steps taken by Jakarta in overcoming environmental challenges. This is a testament that big cities can manage environmental problems effectively,” he said, hoping that Jakarta could be a global model for waste management.

The Japanese delegation's visit ended with a tour around the JRC to observe the waste recycling process and the employed technology firsthand.
