TEMPO.CO, JakartaA delegation from the Japanese Standing Committee on Environment visited the Jakarta Recycle Center (JRC) in South Jakarta, on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The visit aims to strengthen cooperation and friendly relations between Japan and Indonesia in the field of environment, especially waste management.

Head of the Jakarta Environmental Office, Asep Kuswanto, said Jakarta continues to strive to improve the quality of environmental management by learning from Japan. He also expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government for its continuous support.

"We are immensely grateful to the Japanese Government, especially the contribution through JICA in helping to build infrastructure and develop waste management in Jakarta," said Asep.

Asep also said his side is committed to continue improving the waste management system by utilizing sophisticated and appropriate technology.

Asep hopes that the cooperation between Indonesia and Japan can continue and be expanded to other fields, such as air pollution and wastewater management.

"We see many opportunities to strengthen collaboration in various environmental sectors," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Chair of the Japanese House of Representatives’ Standing Committee on Environment Shunsuke Mutai said Jakarta could set an example for other cities in the world in terms of waste management. He also expressed his admiration for Jakarta's waste management efforts.

"This is clear evidence that a big city can handle environmental problems effectively," said Mutai. "This shows Jakarta's potential to lead in waste management innovation."

Mutai also highlighted the importance of decarbonization and waste reduction as part of efforts to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Japan is ready to share the knowledge with Jakarta, he said.
