TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Informatics Application (Aptika) at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo Ministry), Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, revealed that the decryption key given for free by hacker group Brain Cipher was functioning properly. The Indonesian government's cyber team is still working to identify the decryption key in more detail.
Semuel said the decryption key worked on the specimen. "The data was opened successfully but the technical team is still working on it since a lot of it was locked,” he said on Thursday, July 4, 2024, quoted from Kominfo Ministry’s official YouTube channel.
The decryption key functions to open data previously encrypted by Brain Cipher. The ransomware attack was detected on June 20, resulting in hundreds of central and regional agencies losing access to their data and disrupting public services.
Brain Cipher vowed to provide the decryption keys for free on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. "We independently made such a decision, this did not require the intervention of special services and law enforcement agencies. In this case, the attack was so easy that it took us very little time to unload the data,” reads part of the hacker group’s statement, quoted by Tempo from an X social media account, @stealthmole_int.
