TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake shocked people in Batang and Pekalongan regencies, and also in its surrounding areas in Central Java, Indonesia on Sunday afternoon, July 7, 2024. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) data stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4 and had its epicenter on land.

"This type of shallow earthquake is caused by an active fault," said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a written statement he distributed after the earthquake.

The earthquake occurred precisely at 14:35 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The epicenter of the earthquake was located on land at a distance of 5 kilometers northeast of Batang with depth of 6 kilometers.

The earthquake registered as an MMI III at Batang and Pekalongan regions, according to the BMKG. This indicates that the vibration caused by the earthquake is equivalent to the vibrations you would experience on land from a passing truck. The same earthquake was felt, but more subtly, in Kendal.

However, the earthquake vibrations were reportedly capable of damaging several buildings in Batang, including the local grand mosque. "It was so strong that my ceiling broke, I'm still dizzy (because of the vibration) to this day," said the owner of the X account @xhtreee when responding to information about the Batang earthquake from the BMKG.
