Indonesia 'Strongly Condemns' Israel's Move to Legalize Five Jewish Settlements in Occupied West Bank

1 July 2024 21:41 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia strongly condemns Israel's move to legalize five Jewish settlement posts in the West Bank, Palestine. "Israel's settlement and continuous occupation in Palestine’s territory are violations of international law and relevant UN resolutions," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its social media X post on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Together with the international community, the ministry emphasized that Indonesia will continue to demand Israeli accountability and the implementation of a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, Palestine called an extraordinary Arab League meeting to discuss Israel's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip and settlement expansion in the West Bank, Anadolu reported.

“The meeting will be held at the level of permanent delegates this week to discuss confronting the Israeli crimes of genocide and colonial expansion in the West Bank,” Palestinian delegate Mohannad al-Aklouk told the official news agency Wafa. There was no confirmation of the meeting from pan-Arab organizations.

The Israeli cabinet on Thursday, June 27, 2024, approved measures proposed by the head of Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to legalize settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank and impose sanctions on the Palestinian Authority.

Israel's public broadcaster, KAN, reported on Friday, June 28 that the security cabinet approved Smotrich's plan to fight recognition of the Palestinian state and action against Israel in international courts.

Settlement outposts are small communities established by illegal Israeli settlers on private land belonging to Palestinians, without the consent of Israeli authorities.

International law considers the West Bank and East Jerusalem as occupied territories and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity there illegal.

Tensions have been rising in the occupied West Bank since Israel launched its deadly military offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 37,800 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.

At least 554 Palestinians have been killed, including 133 children and nearly 5,300 others injured by Israeli army fire in the West Bank, according to the Health Ministry.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose interim ruling ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians had sought refuge before it was attacked on May 6.
