Australian PM Anthony Albanese Alleges Teen Charged with Terror Offence Threatened His family

30 June 2024 21:38 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that he and his family received threats from a teenage suspected terrorist.

Albanese said Friday, June 28, 2024, that he and his family were among those who received threats in an extremist manifesto by Jordan Patten. The 19-year-old outlined his intention to kill the MPs from the ruling Labor Party.

"There is no place for extremism in Australia. The documentation produced is very worrying, including threats not only to Labor MPs, but also to other people, to my family," Albanese told reporters in Canberra, according to a Xinhua report.

Patten was arrested on Wednesday by the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team (JCTT) in the city of Newcastle, which is 100 kilometers north of Sydney. He allegedly broke into the office of Tim Crakanthorp, Labor MP in the New South Wales State parliament, armed with a knife and tactical equipment.

Patten was charged with one count of preparing or planning a terrorist act.

Authorities said that following Patten's arrest, they became aware of a manifesto expressing anti-immigration, antisemitism and Islamophobia views, as well as a list of complaints against the Labor Party and Albanese.

"This is another reason why the family should be kept away from the media. This is something of concern. I commend the security agencies and police for the swift action they took," Albanese said.

Under Australian law, anyone found guilty of preparing or planning a terrorist act can be sentenced to life in prison.
