TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of Indonesian workers are gearing up to protest tomorrow, July 3, 2024. The demonstration, organized by the Labor Party and the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), aims to address the recent wave of layoffs in the textile, courier, and logistics industries.
The protests stem from concerns over government policies, particularly Trade Ministerial Regulation (Permendag) No. 8 of 2024 concerning Import Policies and Regulations. Workers believe the policy has led to a surge in cheap imports, harming domestic industries and causing job losses.
“In addition to the textile industry, workers in the courier and logistics industry are also threatened with massive layoffs,” the Labor Party President and the KSPI President, Said Iqbal, said in an official release on Tuesday, July 2.
The protest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Jakarta time at the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta. Workers from the Greater Jakarta area (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi) are expected to participate in a large-scale march, moving towards the State Palace, Trade Ministry, Transportation Ministry, and the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU).
Said Iqbal outlines the following key demands for the demonstration:
Halt layoffs in the textile sector.
Repeal Permendag No. 8 of 2024.
Safeguard domestic industries, particularly textiles, courier/logistics, and steel.
Cancel the Decree of the Land Transportation Director General that allows foreign online applicators/platforms to enter the courier/logistics business.
End unfair competition between courier/logistics services owned by foreign platforms, such as Shopee, Blibli, and Tokopedia, and domestic courier/logistics services, including J&T, Pos Indonesia, etc.
Prevent potential layoffs in the courier/logistics sector, including Pos Indonesia.
Hold foreign online platforms accountable for fair practices in the courier/logistics industry.
