Jokowi Says Only Electric Vehicles Allowed in New Capital

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that fuel-based vehicles will not be allowed to enter Nusantara Capital City or IKN since the new capital focuses on green energy. IKN Authority will regulate the matter, he said.
"Only EVs (electric vehicles) are permitted (to be used in IKN)," Jokowi said while inaugurating Nusantara Sustainability Hub on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, monitored by Tempo via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel. "Hence, we hope the air quality in IKN will be below 20."
Jokowi is optimistic that the air quality index in the new capital can reach 0 through mandatory EV use. "(Aiming for) a good air quality standard from 0 to 50. Jakarta is far below the standard," he said, referring to Jakarta’s air quality index which reached over 100.
Regarding the use of electric vehicles, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi once said that his side was preparing a mechanism for EV procurement for IKN. According to him, the government is prioritizing procurement of EV public transport.
"So there will be (public EVs) from Balikpapan, from the airport to the city and around the city,” said Budi Karya on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
After procuring public electric vehicles, Budi Karya said the government plans to provide EVs for individuals, including for state officials. "So, state agencies later would have to purchase or lease (electric vehicles),” he said.
Previously, Chief Urban Mobility of IKN Authortiry Resdiansyah or Dian said electric vehicles would be used entirely in IKN by 2045. However, during the transition period, EV use will be implemented in the central government core area (KIPP).
"We will try (electric vehicles use) at the net-zero carbon KIPP first, no fuel-based vehicles,” Dian said at the end of last year on December 5, 2023.
