TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Low-cost carrier Indonesian AirAsia has launched a direct international route between Jakarta and Brunei Darussalam. The first flight will depart from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to Bandar Seri Begawan on August 2.
"Air tickets from Jakarta to Bandar Seri Begawan can be booked from today, June 5. The first flight will take off on August 2. This route will have a frequency of 3 times a week on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday," Indonesia AirAsia president director Veranita Yosephine said in a written statement, Wednesday.
The flight between Jakarta and Brunei, Veranita said, is the budget carrier's second international route to open in 2024, after Jakarta-Kota Kinabalu, which was just launched in February.
She added that direct flight to Brunei is also expected to create more opportunities for both countries to boost the number of tourists and strengthen ties between the governments of Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.
"With this latest route, Brunei becomes the sixth country to be served by Indonesia AirAsia Indonesia after Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia," she said.
According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of foreign tourists from Brunei Darussalam to Indonesia during the pandemic dropped drastically in 2020 and 2021, but started to increase in 2022, with as many as 4,798 tourists returning to Indonesia. In 2023, the number rebounded to 13,518, an increase of 181.7 percent compared to 2022.
"This number is expected to continue to increase in the future with the opening of direct flight routes from Jakarta to Brunei Darussalam," she said.
