TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's anti-terror squad Densus 88 apprehended eight suspected terrorists who were allegedly affiliated with the notorious Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) network in Poso, South Sulawesi. The arrests were carried out separately from April 16 to 18, 2024.
“Some of them [were arrested] while engaging in physical and military training activities in Poso,” the National Police’s spokesperson Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said in an official statement on Friday, April 19, 2024.
Trunoyudo revealed that the eight suspects were identified as G, BS, SK, A, MWDS, DK, H, and RF. They were suspected of holding crucial positions within the terror group, including preachers, finance officers, recruitment officers, and instructors.
Furthermore, Trunoyudo mentioned that Densus 88 was still investigating the links of the arrested JI treasurer, identified as SO, to the former terror network.
“Densus 88 is still investigating it because there is a connection with fundraising,” he added.
On Thursday, April 18, spokesperson for Densus 88 Senior Commissioner Aswin Siregar confirmed in Jakarta that the squad arrested seven people suspected of being affiliated with members of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group in Central Sulawesi last Tuesday.
“Investigators are still carrying out intensive examinations,” he said.
Previously on April 17, Central Sulawesi Police Chief Inspector General Agus Nugroho had also confirmed the arrests, which were carried out in an attempt to quash the burgeoning ideology of radicalism and terrorism in the country.
