KNKT: Overworked Driver, Key Factor In Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road Multi-Vehicle Crash That Claims 12 Lives

12 April 2024 12:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) Soerjanto Tjahjono said that one factor in the multi-vehicle accident that reportedly claimed 12 lives earlier this week was that the driver of the unofficial travel vehicle had worked over their time limit.

A tragic accident occurred at KM 58 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road involving a Primajasa Bus, a Grand Max, and a Daihatsu Terios last Monday, April 8. The Grand Max car entered the opposite lane and caught fire after being hit by the bus.

The Terios was also involved in this accident. Currently, the police are still identifying the victims. Coordinating Minister for PMK Muhadjir Effendy has reviewed the victim identification process at Karawang Regional Hospital.

"One of the causes of the traffic accident that killed 12 passengers was the driver of an unofficial travel vehicle, working overtime," Soerjanto said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, April 11, 2024, as quoted from Antara.

What is the KNKT?

The KNKT or the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee is an independent institution responsible for carrying out transportation accident investigations.

According to Presidential Regulation Number 102 of 2022 concerning the KNKT, this institution was established to collect, process, analyze, and present data systematically and objectively so that transportation accidents do not occur with the same cause.

Duties and Functions of the KNKT

The KNKT's main task is to carry out transportation accident investigations. Article 3 of the Presidential Regulation states that the KNKT investigates transportation accidents.

In addition, the KNKT also has various functions in carrying out its duties, as stipulated in Article 4 of the Presidential Regulation. One of the main functions of the KNKT is to request data and information from various related parties, such as individuals, accident perpetrators, employees or officials of related agencies, related professional institutions, the public, and other parties.

The KNKT also collects, processes, analyzes, and presents data systematically and objectively regarding the causes of transportation accidents. In addition, the KNKT is tasked with preparing a report on the results of a transportation accident investigation and providing recommendations in its final report.

Other functions of the KNKT include implementing coordination and cooperation in the investigation of transportation accidents, evaluating the recommendations given, and implementing the transportation accident investigation information system.

KNKT Working Principles

The KNKT prioritizes independence, objectivity, and professionalism in carrying out its duties and functions, as described in Article 15. They are responsible for the truth of the investigation results and comply with the provisions of laws and regulations. In addition, the KNKT maintains the confidentiality of data, documents, and information related to transportation accident investigations to ensure the safety and correctness of the investigation process.

With the help of professional and competent investigators, the KNKT can conduct transportation accident investigations more effectively and efficiently. This is an important step in improving transportation safety and preventing future accidents.
