Jokowi Unveils Gumbasa Dam, Irrigation after Rp1.25tn Rehabilitation Completed

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi unveiled the rehabilitated and reconstructed Gumbasa Dam and Irrigation Area in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, today, March 27. The rehabilitation project cost a total of Rp 1.25 trillion.

"The cost of rehabilitating and reconstructing Gumbasa is not small, namely Rp1.25 trillion, which includes the reconstruction of a dam and 35 km of primary canals, 52 km of secondary canals, 119 km of tertiary canals and 82 km of waste canals," the president said, as quoted by Antara.

The rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Gumbasa dam and irrigation is part of the government's efforts to achieve food security and sovereignty by increasing crop production through the improvement of irrigation infrastructure, including dams and irrigation networks spread across the country.

"This is to ensure the availability of water for farmers' fields to increase our agricultural productivity," Jokowi said.

The President assured that the central government and provincial, district and city governments will continue to build, renovate and rehabilitate irrigation networks to improve the agricultural sector, including the Gumbasa Irrigation Area.

"The rehabilitation of the Gumbasa Irrigation Area started in 2016 after a long journey, including the disaster in 2018, and was finally completed this year," Jokowi said.

The president said the facility will optimize the service area of 8,180 hectares of rice fields and increase the agricultural index from the original 149 percent to 300 percent.

Jokowi hopes that the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Gumbasa irrigation area will increase national agricultural productivity, and support food security and sovereignty. "And improve the welfare of farmers," Jokowi said.
