Eid Homecoming: PUPR Ministry Readies Alternative Toll Roads to Anticipate Extreme Traffic Congestion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR Ministry) has prepared as many as seven functional toll roads as free alternatives in case of severe congestion during Eid homecoming and its return flow.
"Take advantage of the toll roads while they are still free,” said a member of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) of the PUPR Ministry, Tulus Abadi virtually in Jakarta, Monday, March 25, 2024.
PUPR Ministry explained that the toll roads include Jakarta Cikampek II South Toll Road (Kutanegara-Sadang Section) stretching along 8.5 kilometers; Solo Yogyakarta-NYIA Toll Road (Kartasura-Karanganom) stretching along 22.3 km; Cimanggis-Cibitung Toll Road (Cikeas-Cibitung) stretching along 19.65 km.
Furthermore, four toll roads in the Sumatra region, namely the Kuala Tanjung-Tebing Tinggi-Parapat Toll Road Section 2 Kuala Tanjung-Indrapura and 3-4 Sinaksak-Seribu Dolok along 56.6 km; Bangkinang-Tanjung Alai Toll Road along 24.7 km; Indrapura-Kisaran Toll Road (Section 2 Limapuluh-Kisaran) along 32 km; and Toll Kayu Agung-Palembang-Betung Section 3 partially (IC Musi Landas STA 64+900-Village Suka Mulya STA 86+127) along 21.2 km.
Even so, Tulus emphasized that the functional toll roads are opened if traffic conditions are unmanageable even with traffic diversion efforts by the police.
Tulus said that the seven functional toll roads have not been officially operated, but could physically be passed by vehicles. However, Tulus also warned that the toll roads will only be opened in case of emergency.
Tulus explained that the toll roads will only operate from 06:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. local time. “The safety aspects of these toll roads have been fulfilled,” he added.
The PUPR Ministry predicts that the peak of the homecoming flow to occur a week before Eid al-Fitr, while the return flow a week after Eid al-Fitr. It is estimated by the Ministry of Transportation that as many as 193.6 million people will travel during the Eid holiday.
"Operational toll roads across Indonesia cover about 2,835 kilometers, starting from Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Kalimantan. The toll roads in Java are the longest," said Tulus.
