TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cenderawasih regional military command or Kodam XVII Cenderawasih claimed it has investigated the video of violence against residents of Papua committed by several Indonesian military personnel. The Kodam Head of Information Lieutenant Colonel Candra Kurniawan confirmed the video.
Thus far, eight military personnel have been detained by the regional military police command (Pomdam) Siliwangi and were accused of committing violence.
"Based on the video identification, it is proven that the soldiers indeed committed acts of violence," Candra said in his statement to Tempo on Monday, March 25, 2024.
Candra said that Kodam XVII Cenderawasih had formed a team to investigate the incident. He said the team immediately went to the alleged crime scene and collected data and legal evidence.
"The investigation team also coordinated with Pomdam III Siliwangi to examine the soldiers suspected of committing acts of violence," he said.
Candra ensured that the Kodam Commander does not tolerate any form of violation of the law, and stressed that those conducting a violation must be prosecuted. "The Commander always emphasizes to avoid bloodshed in Papua," Candra said.
Until now, the team and Pomdam Siliwangi continue to conduct examinations of the 8 soldiers to continue gathering evidence.
"This is proof of firm action and seriousness in law enforcement against soldiers who are suspected of committing violence," he said.
The incident of torture against a Papua resident occurred in Puncak Regency, Central Papua. In a viral video, a Papuan man with his hands tied behind appeared to be soaked with water in a barrel with soldiers standing around him.
