TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) highlighted a significant spike in flight ticket prices offered by airlines ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The agency collected data from various media outlets and the Transportation Ministry on airfares that have exceeded the price ceiling.
Deswin Nur, the head of the KPPU's Public Relations and Cooperation Bureau, has affirmed that the KPPU intends to summon seven airlines to disseminate information about the problem to prevent violations before Eid.
“God willing, we will summon the airlines next week,” Deswin said in a text message to Tempo on Thursday, March 21.
The seven airlines that the KPPU will summon are Garuda Indonesia, Citilink Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Nam Air, Batik Air, Lion Air, and Wings Air.
According to the KPPU records, the seven airlines were implicated in cases of alleged violations of Article 5 and Article 11 of Law No. 5 of 1999 on scheduled commercial air transportation services for domestic economy class passengers, or ticket price-fixing cases in 2019.
Therefore, the KPPU has expressed its concern that the seven airlines may once again raise prices without rational reasons and has appealed to the airlines to inform consumers first before adopting a policy of raising airfares.
The Transportation Ministry has predicted that the peak of Eid homecoming will occur on Monday, April 8, when the collective leave begins. Out of the estimated 193.6 million travelers, the majority are expected to come from East Java with 16.2 percent or 31.3 million people, followed by those from Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek with 14.7 percent or 28.43 million people.
