TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake shook the Aru Islands region, Maluku, on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 06:57 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
"The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with 5.3 magnitude," said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono in a written statement today.
The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 4.87° Southern Latitude and 134.11° Longitude East, or precisely located at sea 100 kilometers northwest of the Aru Islands, Maluku, with a 27-kilometer depth.
"The earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to crustal rock deformation activity in the Aru Graben Zone," Daryono said.
"The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has a downward movement mechanism with a combination of horizontal (oblique normal fault)," he added.
Based on the shakemap estimation, this earthquake caused shaking in the Dobo, Kaimana, and Tual areas with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, with the vibrations felt by several people, and light objects hanging swayed.
Modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential. "Until 07:20 a.m. WIB, BMKG recorded no aftershocks," Daryono concluded.
