TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the phenomenon of the super new moon that coincides with perigee (the closest distance between moon and earth) on March 10, 2024, has the potential to increase the height of maximum sea tides causing tidal flooding.
Head of the BMKG's Maritime Meteorology Center, Eko Prasetyo, said that based on monitoring of water level data and tidal predictions, coastal flooding or tidal flooding has the potential to occur in several coastal areas of Indonesia.
"The potential for coastal flooding is different in time (days and hours) in each region," Eko said through a written statement.
In general, tidal floods have an impact on community activities around ports and coasts, such as loading and unloading, activities in coastal communities, as well as salt ponds and inland fisheries activities.
"Stay vigilant and alert to anticipate the impact of maximum tides and pay attention to updates on maritime weather information from BMKG," he said.
