TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Embassy in Canberra held a batik promotional event at Balai Kartini, Australia. This agenda was organized by the Canberra Trade Attaché together with the Indonesian Fashion Designers Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI).

"The batik promotion is expected to create a profitable synergy between cultural diplomacy and trade to bring a positive image of Indonesia on the international stage," said Trade Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Agung Haris Setiawan, in a written statement on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Agung revealed that several boutiques in Canberra had shown interest in the batik promoted. Agung noted that the transaction potential reached AUS$15,000 to AUS$20,000 or around Rp150-200 million.

This batik promotional event consisted of a fashion show and a batik workshop. More than 120 participants attended the event, including female Ambassadors, members of the Association of Spouses of Heads of Mission (ASHOM), members of the Women International Club (WIC), business or boutique owners, and the diaspora of business actors in Canberra.

At this event, Gee Batik, led by APPMI Yogyakarta Chairman Sugeng Waskito, introduced contemporary abstract motifs of the batik combined with classic Jogja elements. Meanwhile, Adewani Lubis from Dewani Batik highlighted the beauty of Borneo in her collections. Also present was Essy Masita from Maharani Persada, presenting traditional Indonesian textiles with a modern touch in her collection entitled Maharani Persada.

Agung said the collaboration between the Government of Yogyakarta and the Trade Attaché enabled free delivery of Yogyakarta SME products to Australia. It was aimed to support the penetration of new products to Australia, especially for small and medium business products such as batik.

The APPMI delegation is also scheduled to visit Melbourne and take part in Indonesia Modest Fashion Week Melbourne (IMFWM) through March 1-5, 2024. IMFWM will be attended by 19 Indonesian designers.
