TEMPO.CO, Jakarta President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that Indonesia's economy has been quite sturdy amidst global uncertainty. "We should be grateful, thank God, amid continuous world crises, hard-to-calculate economic uncertainty, our economy remains sturdy and considered the top three economies with good economic growth based on G20," said Jokowi on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Jokowi explained that the Indonesian economy in 2023 grew 5.05 percent, with controlled inflation at 2.57 percent.

Indonesia's poverty rate fell to 9.36 percent, the unemployment rate fell to 5.32 percent, and the Gini ratio also dropped to 0.388 percent.

"Even though we see good numbers, I need to remind you that we have to be careful, we have to remain vigilant, because of the growing complexity of future global competition," he said.

Jokowi also said that the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Yemen had contributed to the spike in food inflation, causing several countries to implement protection policies for their food commodities.

The president noted that currently there are 1,348 protection policies implemented by the world countries concerning food. This number has tripled compared to 2014 and is estimated to continue increasing.

"Everyone is now putting the brakes on exporting their food, both wheat and rice, due to climate changes, shifts in the weather, and supply chain disruptions," Jokowi concluded.
