KPK: More Than 10 Employees Named Suspects in Prison Bribery Scandal

21 February 2024 13:21 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated that it had named more than ten people as suspects in the case of illicit payments from KPK detainees in exchange for prison perks. This was confirmed by the commission's spokesperson Ali Fikri on Tuesday, February 20.

Speaking at the KPK Building, Ali said that the 10 people were named as suspects after the case entered the investigation stage. He asked the public to be patient, ensuring that the KPK will complete all legal processes.

"The case is now in process, the KPK has formed a team from the HR Bureau, General Bureau, Legal Bureau units under the Secretary General, including the inspectorate, to form a team to follow up on the decision of the KPK Supervisory Council," he said.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Supervisory Council previously said that 90 of the anti-corruption agency employees were guilty of illegal levies at the KPK Detention Center.

"The accused are given sanctions in the form of direct, public apologies," the Supervisory Council's chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said on February 15.

Tumpak said that 12 of the employees who have been questioned will be handed over to the KPK Secretariat General for further examination and case resolution. "This is because they committed their act prior to the formation of the KPK Supervisory Council, therefore the Council has no authority to adjudicate on this matter."

Tumpak said that based on legal facts presented at the ethics hearing, the accused knew that the KPK detainees were using mobile phones within the confines of the detention center, but allowed it in exchange for monthly payments from the detainees.

The examinees also provided the prisoners with other facilities, such as helping them bring in goods and food, or letting them use power banks to charge their devices, which is forbidden.
