TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary-General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle or PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto, emphasized that his party is ready to take up an opposition role to the government to carry out checks and balances.
Hasto mentioned that during President Joko Widodo or Jokowi's second term, centralized power gave rise to manipulation, hence, a balancing act is required.
Being on the outside of the government, Hasto said, is a patriotic duty. "When PDIP was outside of the government in 2004 and 2009, we were widely appreciated for our role in improving the quality of democracy,” Hasto said on Wednesday, Feb. 14, as quoted in a written statement.
In addition, Hasto reported that in the 2009 elections, final voter list manipulation occurred, causing DPR to exercise its right to inquiry. At that time, Hasto went on, an awareness to protect the constitutional rights to vote emerged, even though it unraveled during the 2024 elections.
Many voters abroad cannot exercise their right to vote due to administrative factors during this election, Hasto said, claiming that “upstream to downstream fraudulence truly occurred.”
The Indonesian society is currently facing two things, Hasto explained; those who desire a democracy absence of any intervention, and those who desire power that was kickstarted by a Constitutional Court legal manipulation.
"Whatever happens within the national political dynamics, we [PDIP] are obliged to bring light to it for the people," he concluded.
