TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi asked the people of Indonesia to not insult each other because of different choices in the upcoming 2024 election. He delivered the message during the 101st-anniversary celebration of Indonesia’s Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and the 78th anniversary of Muslimat NU at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

In his speech, Jokowi reminded the people that the legislative and presidential elections would soon be held in the country. "The election process is important and decisive, but we don't want to insult each other because of the election, because of differences of opinion, because of different choices. That's prohibited," he said before the thousands of participants present at the event.

Jokowi said that people should not insult or badmouth each other. Moreover, he said, if they don't greet each other. "Neighbors don't greet each other. That's not allowed. Religious women don't talk to each other. That's not allowed. Residents fight each other. That's not allowed," said the father of vice presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

He also asked the public to not be easily provoked. "Don't let it divide us like that. Do you agree?" Jokowi said.

The former Governor of DKI Jakarta said that national integrity, unity, and harmony are the most important. According to President Jokowi, this must be maintained even though there are differences in political choices.
