TEMPO.CO, Denpasar, Bali - The Denpasar Immigration Office in Bali deported a foreign citizen from Egypt for not being able to pay the fine for overstaying his residence permit.

Head of the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center (Rudenim), Gede Dudy Duwita, stated on Wednesday that the Egyptian, with the initials as MMKE, was temporarily detained at Rudenim after being transferred from Denpasar Immigration.

"He could not pay his fine, amounting to Rp1 million per day, for overstaying in Indonesia," Duwita explained.

He remarked that MMKE arrived in Indonesia via the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, on November 18, 2023, using a Visa on Arrival (VoA) expiring on December 17, 2023.

Thereafter, on January 8, 2024, residents reported to the police in the Abiansemal area about a stranded foreigner on the side of the road.

The police then handed over MMKE to the Denpasar Immigration for inspection and found that his residence permit had expired since 23 days.

MMKE claimed to have forgotten that his residence permit had expired and did not extend his residence permit.

"Even though he claims that this was due to negligence, immigration can still deport him," Duwita noted.

The 43-year-old man was then deported via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, to Cairo, Egypt, with the expense borne by his brother.

Duwita reminded that foreigners in Indonesia, with an expired residence permit for more than 60 days, will be subject to deportation and detention.

Foreigners, who are deported, will then have a deportation stamp on their passport, while foreigners, who overstayed for less than 60 days, must pay a fine of Rp1 million per day, with no deportation stamp on their passport, he stated.

Provisions related to deportation are regulated in Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration in Article 78.

Meanwhile, the fine of Rp1 million per day is regulated in Government Regulation Number 28 of 2019 concerning types and rates for Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) that applies to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
