Indonesia Invites Vietnam to Develop Electric Vehicles Together

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita invited Vietnam to collaborate in developing electric vehicles and other industries, such as food security and human resources.
The minister conveyed the information when he accompanied President Joko Widodo or Jokowi in the meeting with the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien in Hanoi on Thursday, Jan. 11.
"We invite Vietnam’s industry and trade ministry to maintain our discussion in strengthening the partnership and collaboration," said Minister Agus Gumiwang as quoted from Antara today, Jan. 13.
Agus further said that Indonesia is a huge market for the automotive industry. According to data, car ownership in Indonesia reached 19.1 million units and motorcycles 128 million units.
Besides, it is projected that the demand for electric vehicle batteries will continue to increase. The industry ministry also hopes that both countries can support each other for the industry ministries meeting in ASEAN.
According to Safeguard Global report, Indonesia is on the top 10 list of global manufacturers with a global manufacturing output of 1.4 percent. Meanwhile, according to the World Population Review, Indonesia is at the 12th rank, and Vietnam is at the 23rd position.
Until November 2023, Indonesian investment in Vietnam reached US$651.21 million with 120 projects. The realization of Indonesian investment ranked 5th among the Southeast Asian countries investing in Vietnam.
Indonesia is still the destination country for Vietnamese investors to invest in the industrial sector. In 2023, there will be an increase in investment realization of US$1.5 million, or an increase of 6.1 percent from the previous year. Investment in the industrial sector includes the paper and printing industry and the basic metal industry, metal goods, non-machinery, and equipment.
