TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo claimed that traffic congestion that occurred in Indonesian cities, especially on Java Island is caused by the increasing number of citizens using private vehicles instead of public transportation.
"Majority of people, when they have the economic power, would immediately buy cars, and motorcycles. Everybody uses private vehicles and abandons mass transportation," he said as quoted from the YouTube of the Presidential Secretariat today, Wednesday, Jan.10.
The government is currently pushing for more utilization of public transportation, Jokowi said. One of the efforts done is by preparing more public transport alternatives to be enjoyed by Indonesian citizens.
"For example in Jakarta, we introduce MRT, and the underground ones, subway. LRT is recently finished, there's also the high-speed train, KRL, and TransJakarta. These will push people to use public transport and abandon private vehicles," he said.
"All cities in Indonesia must start heading in that direction, to use mass transportation and public transport," he concluded.
