TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The scholarship program managed by the Finance Ministry, the Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), prepares scholarships for 10,000 students in 2024. The LPDP director, Dwi Larso, said the figure follows the number of scholarship recipients in 2023, which was 9,959.
Last year, the LPDP disbursed a budget of around Rp10 trillion for all types of scholarships which were organized directly by the LPDP and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology or the Religious Affairs Ministry.
“We have prepared a budget of around 10 trillion. So, the limit for maximizing recruitment is the budget. This budget cannot be determined yet, but it can be predicted because the endowment funds continue to be invested. Even by the end of December, it could change, depending on the interest,” Dwi told Tempo on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
He said the number of applicants increased after the pandemic. In 2021, there were about 4,000 applicants, up from previously 3,000. “The LPDP is targeting around 8,000 to 10,000 awardees,” he added.
However, Dwi emphasized that his side would also enhance the impact. “Since 2021, we have been collaborating co-funding with several countries, including the Netherlands, China, and several universities for programs that we consider national priorities,” he said.
For example, LPDP is working with the Netherlands on maritime, cyber law, and smart agriculture, with China on lithium battery industry development, and with Singapore on technology-based startups, as well as co-funding with several universities in France.
“They pay some funds for the fields needed by the nation, such as biotechnology, oceans, and biodiversity. In 2024, there will be a collaboration with the Australia Awards in the field of green renewable energy,” Dwi outlined.
From 2010 to 2023, LPDP accumulated a total of Rp 139.11 trillion in endowment funds and provided scholarships to 45,500 awardees. There are already 21,373 alumni with 2,782 projects. LPDP also prepares targeted scholarships and scholarships for affirmative regions reaching 23,111.
Registration for LPDP Phase I scholarships will open soon on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
