TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Yogyakarta warned its residents of extreme weather potential involving medium to heavy rain with lightning and strong winds for the upcoming week.
"Based on the most recent analysis for the upcoming week, atmospherical dynamics that cause extreme weather potential is recorded,' said the head of Meteorology Station of BMKG Yogyakarta Wajono in a statement on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024.
In addition to downpours and strong winds, Warjono also asks people who reside in steep areas to stay vigilant of the consequences of extreme weather, such as flooding, uprooted trees, slippery roads, and shortened visibility.
Referring to the Meteorology Station of BMKG Yogyakarta, the raincloud formation in January will be quite intense since the Asian winter Monsoon that is associated with the western wind season and increased rainfall is present.
Moreover, the Madden-Jullian Oscillation activities have entered the Indian Ocean, while the Rossby wave activities also contribute to the increased water vapor supplies in the southern part of Java.
According to BMKG, the air humidity level in Yogyakarta at 1.5 to 5.5 kilometers height ranges around 70 to 95 percent, causing raincloud formation potential during the afternoon to late afternoon.
On January 5, medium to heavy rain with lightning and strong winds is forecasted to fall over Yogyakarta City, Sleman, northern and central Bantul, northern Kulon Progo, and northern Gunungkidul.
The next day on January 6, similar weather will occur in Yogyakarta City, Sleman, northern Kulon Progo, and northern Gunungkidul. While on January 7, the rain will fall on Sleman, northern Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul.
