TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that until Tuesday, no Indonesian nationals were among the casualties of the Japan earthquake on Jan. 1, 2024. The most recent report noted 48 people died in the earthquake in Ishikawa.

Meanwhile, injuries are reported in Ishikawa, Niigata, Fukui, Toyama, and Gifu. Around 30 buildings in Ishikawa collapsed.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate in Osaka keep coordinating with local authorities and Indonesian diaspora in Japan," the Directorate for the Protection of Citizens and Legal Entities announced.

In the ministry report, it was written that until Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at 05:40 p.m. local time, nine Indonesian nationals, the majority are college students, have been staying at a shelter prepared by local authorities.

Local authorities have called off the tsunami warning but warned of possible aftershocks for the upcoming week. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate in Osaka urged diasporas in Japan to remain vigilant.

The powerful quake with an initial magnitude of 7.4 hits the coastal area of the Japan Sea, namely Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa, and Niigata. Meteorological Agency in Japan warned of possible tsunami waves up to 5 meters.

The Japan earthquake also triggered a tsunami warning in North Korea and Russia.
