6 Food Items to Combat Motion Sickness During Christmas Travel

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Long trips are not friendly for those prone to motion sickness, even during such festivities of Christmas and New Year holidays.

Motion sickness occurs because your brain cannot compute the information sent by your ears, eyes, and body which causes you to feel nauseated.

Citing clevelandclinic.org, motion sickness is caused by a family history of motion sickness, hormonal birth control, inner ear disorders, menstrual periods, migraines, Parkinson's disease, and pregnancy.

Several food items could ease up your motion sickness. However, be mindful of greasy food or acidic food items lest it could exacerbate your nausea. Recommended food items to combat motion sickness are as follows:

1. Ginger

Ginger could help decrease stomach irritation, bringing instant and effective relief to your nausea. Ginger could be consumed in the form of candy, tea, or other beverages.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint is traditionally used to treat motion sickness. According to the Times of India, National Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine and a study from the Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing showed that the smell of peppermint could help ease nausea. For the best taste and result, you may consume peppermint in the form of tea.

3. Crackers 

Crackers are rich with starch which will help ease your nauseated stomach. The bland taste of crackers combined with the freshness of cold water is best to combat motion sickness.

4. Nuts

Nuts, if consumed in moderation, could help prevent nausea that is associated with motion sickness during long trips.

5. Bananas

Bananas are among the best fruits to combat dehydration and nausea. The potassium and starch contained in bananas are good for recovering yourself from motion sickness.

6. Mineral water and carbonated drinks

Water will keep you hydrated, which in turn will keep the migraines and nausea at bay. However, don't overdrink your water because it will worsen motion sickness. Carbonated drinks are also recommended to ease your nausea. Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee if you feel nauseous.
