TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Railways company or PT KAI in its operational area of Yogyakarta has not implemented mandatory mask-wearing amid the COVID-19 spike in Jakarta, according to its public relations manager Krisbiyantoro in Solo on Thursday, Dec. 21.
The health protocol employed by KAI Yogyakarta still followed those included in the Transportation Minister Circular Letter No. 17 of 2023.
"[KAI Yogyakarta] is indeed still allowing passengers to not wear masks only if they are in a healthy condition," Krisbiyantoro said. "We also no longer implement COVID-19 screening to enter the station."
However, he added, if the passenger is sick with symptoms such as coughing or feeling feverish, KAI Yogyakarta asked them to mask up. He also urged passengers to complete the fourth vaccination dose before boarding the train.
During the Christmas and New Year holiday period, KAI Yogyakarta prepares Christmas and New Year Transport Posts to provide service for people who will use the train for their holiday travel.
He added that KAI decided that the holiday transport period started on Dec. 21, 2023, and will end on Jan. 7, 2023. In total, KAI will deploy 693 security personnel from relevant elements to safeguard the holiday transport.
"The security personnel will safeguard aboard the trains, at stations, and patrol along the railways," he concluded.
"The [personnel] also go through risk management simulation concerning railway operational disruption and other security risks. This shows KAI's preparedness to face unexpected situations."
