KPK Arrests North Maluku Governor in Sting Operation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) launched a sting operation in Ternate of North Maluku and Jakarta on Monday, Dec. 18. The operation resulted in the arrest of over 15 people, including North Maluku Governor Abdul Gani Kasuba.
“So far, more than 15 people have been arrested in both South Jakarta and in Ternate. They include the governor of North Maluku and several other officials, as well as private parties,” the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson Ali Fikri told Tempo on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
Ali explained that the investigation team is still gathering information from the arrested parties. “We will announce this in more detail after we are sure that the entire operation has been completed,” he added.
KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata also confirmed the sting operation in North Maluku. However, he stopped short of providing any further details about the chronology of the event.
“The staffers have confirmed that there was an activity in North Maluku. At present, the staffers are still investigating the parties suspected of involvement,” Alexander said in a written statement, on Monday evening, Dec. 18.
He assured that the KPK would provide more information on the sting operation in Maluku, especially on the arrested parties. “Further developments will be conveyed,” Alexander said.
Tempo received information that four officials from the North Maluku provincial government were taken to Jakarta this morning, Tuesday, Dec. 19, boarding Garuda Indonesia airline with flight code GA 649.
They are the Head of the Education and Culture Agency Imran Yakub, Acting Head of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency Daud Ismail, Head of the Goods and Services Procurement Bureau (BPBJ) Ridwan Arsan, and one PUPR official.
Samsuddin A Kadir, North Maluku Regional Secretary, confirmed the arrest and claimed he did not know what case the KPK was investigating. “Yes, I heard that, but I don't know what the case is,” Samsuddin told journalists today.
