TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Commission or KPU held a coordination meeting in preparation for the vice presidential debate today, Monday, December 18, 2023. The first vice presidential debate is scheduled for Friday, December 22, at the Jakarta Convention Center.
KPU Commissioner August Mellaz explained that the meeting today was a follow-up to the previous meeting on December 14, 2023. "We will inform the result [of the meeting] later," August said before inaugurating the meeting.
The commission was mum on the details of the first vice presidential debate for the upcoming 2024 general elections. According to information obtained earlier, KPU would announce the panelists and moderators after the meeting.
The themes for the anticipated vice presidential debate are people-centered economy, digital economy, finance, tax investment, trade, State Budget/Local Budget management, infrastructure, and urban.
The debate will face three running vice presidential candidates on stage, Muhaimin Iskandar, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Mahfud Md. The presidential candidates would be present as the audience.
KPU previously held the first presidential debate between Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto, and Ganjar Pranowo on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
The three running candidates debated various topics such as governance, law, human rights, corruption eradication, bolstering democracy, strengthening public service, and public harmony.
Vice Chairman of Gerindra Party Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo earlier proposed for the debate to implement a town hall meeting format. The format allows the event to be participated by experts or inter-generational representatives to engage with running candidates' ideas.
