TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Budi Arie Setiadi stated that the ministry will soon launch the ethical guideline for the usage of Artificial Intelligence or AI.
The ethical guideline will be provided under a circular letter or a ministerial regulation, he said. "Depends on the need, [the guideline] is just a starter to wait for the next development. The regulatory level will be adjusted," he said on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
Kominfo ministry will learn from countries that have implemented AI ethical guidelines first, such as European countries. Despite its beneficial aspects, AI also proves to be a risk for society, thus necessitating a guideline to regulate its utilization.
"We cannot outright reject AI's development but we must regulate the minimization of its negative impacts," he said.
When asked about the launch date of the ethical guideline, the minister emphasized that it is sooner rather than later.
Earlier, deputy Kominfor Minister Nezar Patria mentioned that the ministry will launch a circular letter concerning AI in Indonesia on Dec. 5.
According to Nezar, the circular letter will become the guideline for the ecosystem of AI development in Indonesia, including for businesspeople to communities. From design, development, and utilization, Nezar said.
The circular letter would be what is known as soft regulation with no imperative consequences. "The ethical circular letter on artificial intelligence is intended for a reference of adoptable principles for the ecosystem of AI development," Nezar concluded.
