TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Communications and Information (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that the country’s internet speed is ranked 78th in the world, with an average speed of 23.2 megabytes per second (Mbps).
“Other countries are much faster [in terms of internet speed], but we are ranked 9th out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia for internet speed,” Budi Arie said at the Indonesia Digital Summit 2023 at the Four Season Hotel, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 28.
He outlined that Indonesia is only above Myanmar, which is ranked 10th, and behind Laos, Cambodia, and Singapore.
Budi Arie explained that internet speed is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed, especially in remote areas that still lack internet connectivity. To tackle this issue, the Kominfo Ministry is working on a policy to encourage internet service providers to increase their internet speed.
“They are capable of selling 100 Mbps internet with the same host, but they only offer 5-10 Mbps, so how [our internet speed] can be fast [like in other countries],” the minister added.
Budi Arie explained that in the age of digitalization, speed is everything. Therefore, the government must support fast Internet speed. "Except for one thing, [which is] family relations, which should not be digital," he said jokingly.
