Residents around Soekarno-Hatta Airport Stage Protest over Land Compensation

27 November 2023 21:13 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - More than 100 locals residing near Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang staged a protest at Jalan Perimeter Utara, on Monday afternoon, Nov. 27, demanding compensation for their land and buildings that were evicted for the construction of the airport’s third runway. As per the protesters,  the airport’s authority, PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II), has not paid the compensation for the past five years.

“We were promised that we would be paid, but since 2018 until now, we have not received any payment yet,” the rally’s coordinator Herman said at the location, which is eight meters away from the runway’s gate.

Herman said AP II has yet to pay for around 97 plots of land, consisting of permanent and semi-permanent buildings belonging to hundreds of residents in two villages, namely Bojong Renged Village and Rawa Burung Village.

“Our land and buildings have been measured since 2018 and are currently being handled by AP II for the purpose of Runway 3, but we have not been paid,” he said, adding that the price of each plot of land varies depending on the area and type of building.

Dozens of airport and Tangerang police officers secured the protest which caused traffic jams on the alternative routes to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Sedyatmo Toll Road, Dadap, and towards Tangerang City.

Chairman of Bojong Renged Village’s community unit (RW) 17, Yassin Viktor, added that the residents demanded land compensation and replacement roads and water channels in order to prevent flooding in the Bojong Renged and Rawa Burung village areas.

“Because the water from the village canal cannot flow into the canal on Jalan Perimeter Utara because they are covered with garbage,” he said.

Representatives of the residents are reportedly holding a dialogue with AP II. The residents threatened that if their demands were not met, they would stage another protest around Soekarno-Hatta Airport with a larger number of participants.
