TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Syiah Kuala University (USK) in Aceh province will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on higher education with the government of Palestine on Thursday (November 16, 2023), according to USK Rector Professor Marwan.

Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, Dr. Zuhair S.M Al Shun, will visit the university campus to sign the MoU, he informed in a statement published on the USK's official website on Wednesday, November 15.

According to Marwan, the MoU will pave the way for Palestinian students enrolled at USK to participate in the Indonesian language training program before commencing their studies.

The MoU will also pave the way for both Indonesia and Palestine to improve the quality of higher education, and includes an international scholarship scheme for Palestinian students, he said.

The USK has several international students from several countries, including Palestine, he added.

As per its official website, the USK is the oldest public university in Aceh province.

It was founded on September 2, 1961, and its founding was supported by Indonesian Presidential Decree No. 161/1962, dated April 24, 1962.

USK, which currently has 12 faculties and more than 30,000 students, is among the top three universities in Indonesia after the University of Indonesia (UI) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), according to Scimago Institutions Rankings (2023).
