Indonesia Attends ASEAN's Transport Ministers Meeting in Laos

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi attended the series of meetings between ASEAN transport ministers and officials in Laos on November 9-10, 2023. The series of meetings will discuss ASEAN's commitment to prioritizing the development of sustainable transportation to tackle environmental issues such as climate change and global warming.

"We discussed a great deal about energy transition, electric vehicle ecosystem, digitalization, and sustainability. These actual topics become the basis of establishing connectivity," he said in Laos on Thursday, Nov.9, as quoted from a press release received on Friday.

Minister Budi attended the 55th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting and Associated Meetings (STOM) and the 29th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting and Associated Meetings (ATM) during his two-day visit. The meetings were attended by transport ministers and senior officials of the ASEAN members as well as ASEAN's dialogue partners such as China, Japan, South Korea, and the EU.

During the series of meetings, ASEAN members agreed to boost the electric vehicle ecosystem. "Sustainable transportation is one of the priority economic deliverables from the transportation sector provided in Indonesian Partnership in ASEAN 2023," Minister Budi said.

"ASEAN state members are unified to keep bolstering connectivity by land, sea, and air. We discussed in detail with ASEAN members and its dialogue partners, namely Japan, China, Korea, and the EU concerning pioneered programs and future initiatives," he added.

Additionally, Minister Budi also explained that Indonesia is consistently active in participating in ASEAN meetings to voice and initiate various programs including in the transportation sector.

The series of meetings also agreed on several policies concerning the transportation sector, including drafting and adopting the ASEAN Air Navigation Service Masterplan 3rd Edition, ASEAN sustainable aviation action plan, smart port guidelines, and future repatriation plan.
