Suhartoyo Tapped as New Chief Justice of Constitutional Court, Replacing Anwar Usman

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Constitutional Court (MK) officially appointed Suhartoyo as the new Chief Justice, replacing Anwar Usman. Deputy Chief Justice Saldi Isra made the announcement after the judges' deliberation session held today, Nov. 9, 2023.
“We agreed to select His Excellency Dr. Suhartoyo as the New MK Chief Justice,” Isra said accompanied by eight other judges at a press conference at the MK’s courtroom on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Isra was re-elected as the Deputy Chief Justice.
Isra explained that the deliberation led to the selection of two candidates, Suhartoyo and himself. The judges then agreed to elect Suhartoyo as the Chief Justice and Saldi Isra as the deputy.
Tempo observed that all constitutional judges were present at the meeting. They are Anwar Usman, Arief Hidayat, Wahiduddin Adams, Manahan Sitompul, Suhartoyo, Saldi Isra, Enny Nurbaningsih, Guntur Hamzah, and Daniel Yusmic.
As previously reported, the Ethics Council of the Constitutional Court or MKMK on Tuesday, Nov. 7, dismissed Anwar Usman from his position as Chief Justice for committing serious violations of the code of ethics and conduct for judges.
