TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The historical building of Asrama Inggrisan Banyuwangi will be transformed into a heritage tourism destination, led by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing in 2024.

Asrama Inggrisan or Inggrisan Dormitory is one of Banyuwangi's cultural heritage, built by the colonial government of the Netherlands in 1776. The building was then taken over by the British East India Company during the 18th century as an office for the underwater telegram network connecting Europe to Australia.

Dr. Thor Kerr from Curtin University Perth and Irfan Wahyudi from Universitas Airlangga has researched the connection between Banyuwangi and Australia in the past and found that the Inggrisan Dormitory was one of its center of activity.

Meanwhile, the Strategic Facilities and Infrastructures Director at the PUPR Ministry Essy Asiah stated that the ministry has been mandated for several developments in Banyuwangi, including the Inggrisan Dormitory.

"The PUPR Ministry is committed to supporting developments that will boost local economic growth. In Banyuwangi, we will revitalize the Inggrisan Dormitory," Essy said in a written statement received by Tempo on Thursday.

The development of the Inggrisan Dormitory will take on the concept of edu-tourism  However, from an architectural standpoint, the development will not change any of the original facades of the building since it is a heritage, Essy said. "At the location, we will also develop a museum, hotel, and a meeting point," Essy added.

The team from the PUPR Ministry visited Banyuwangi from October 31 to November 1 to survey the location.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani mentioned that the revitalization of the Inggrisan Dormitory will strengthen the tourism sector in Banyuwangi, especially heritage tourism.

"We are grateful to the central government especially the PUPR Ministry for supporting the development in Banyuwangi. This will certainly create an impact on local economic growth," Ipuk said on Thursday, November 2.
