TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said the authorities continue the efforts to uncover Rp349 trillion worth of illicit transactions at the Finance Ministry. The Money Laundering Crime Task Force is still investigating the case of gold imports totaling Rp189 trillion.
He first revealed the suspicious transactions at the Finance Ministry during a joint meeting with Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
“This is the development of the case handling, which used to cause a stir in the DPR,” he said in a press statement at his office on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The candidate for the 2024 presidential election disclosed the suspicious transactions at the Finance Ministry, sparking debates between several members of Commission III and Mahfud, including Democratic Party politician Benny K. Harman.
He explained that the cases were handled separately as they involved 300 letters of Analysis and Examination Result Reports from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) on the Rp349 trillion transactions.
According to him, some of the cases include the case of a former employee of the Directorate General of Tax, Rafael Alun Trisambodo. There were also gratification and money laundering cases involving the former Director of Audit and Collection for the period 2016-2019, Angin Prayitno Aji, who was sentenced to seven years in prison.
“There were also cases in various places, such as at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. There, those involved were dismissed, transferred, or demoted,” he said.
Commenting on the long time it takes for the cases to be unveiled, Mahfud MD argued that the law enforcement process does indeed take a long time, unlike committing a crime. “People can commit crimes in a minute. But investigating a one-minute crime can take months or even years,” he said.
