TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG reported a 4.5-magnitude earthquake on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 01:21 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time) at East Kotawaringin Regency, Kalimantan.

According to the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG, Daryono, it was a shallow crustal earthquake triggered by an unmapped active fault activity.

The earthquake was located inland, 25 kilometers southeast of Sampit, Central Kalimantan at a 13-kilometer depth. The quake was felt at a III MMI Scale intensity in Baamang Regency and Mentawa Baru Regency, Ketapang, akin to passing trucks while people are inside houses.

No reported casualties resulted from the earthquake so far, BMKG said.

Additionally, monitoring by BMKG showed that there was no potential for a tsunami at the time. There are also no reports of aftershocks.

Dozens of Sampit residents reported that this was the first time this city experienced an earthquake.
