Jokowi Meets Vladimir Putin in China

17 October 2023 22:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi met informally with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 17. The two met before attending the Welcoming Dinner for Leaders of Belt and Road Forum (BRF).

The Palace has not yet released a press statement on the brief meeting between Putin and Jokowi, who was accompanied by First Lady Iriana.

Based on the agenda of the President on his second day in China, Jokowi was not scheduled to have a formal talk with Putin. However, the Presidential Secretariat's Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media Bey Machmudin shared several photos of the two leaders having a light chat today.

Jokowi is now in China for a two-day visit on October 17-18, 2023. Aside from meeting several investors in China, Jokowi was scheduled to meet with China's President Xi Jinping.

On Tuesday morning, Oct. 17, Jokowi held a bilateral meeting with Li Qiang at the Diaoyutai State House in Beijing. During the meeting, he lauded the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China, which has developed very well over the past ten years.

President Jokowi also laid a wreath at the People's Heroes Monument in Tiananmen Square in Beijing and then met with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Reports suggested that Jokowi last met with Putin in Moscow in June 2022, several months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.
