Haze Shrouds Bengkulu, Endangers Flights: BMKG

17 October 2023 16:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Fatmawati Bengkulu Station announced that the haze of smoke covering Bengkulu City has been classified as dangerous for aviation transportation.

On Tuesday morning, Oct. 17, the visibility was only less than one kilometer, while the modal visibility was 2.5 kilometers.

“Based on the upper air measurements via Radio Sonde, the visibility is less than one kilometer, while the safe visibility for flights is 2.5 kilometers, so this is already in the dangerous category,” the agency’s forecaster at the Fatmawati Station, Sukarno Anjasman, said in Bengkulu on Tuesday.

The haze conditions in the city on Tuesday morning were the worst compared to the previous few days.

Sukarno said the smog in Bengkulu City would continue for the next few days as the authority still detected hotspots in some areas. At least nine hotspots were detected in Rejang Lebong Regency, Lebong Regency, and Mukomuko Regency.

Apart from disrupting aviation activities, the haze also disturbed motorists because of limited visibility.

The Bengkulu City Health Agency appealed to people in the area to wear masks to prevent upper respiratory tract infections or ISPA caused by the haze in the city.

“We urge people to maintain physical health, avoid smoke, and use masks when going outdoors,” said Joni Haryadi, the Acting Head of the Bengkulu Health Agency.
