TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo said his side was ready to evaluate the declining performance of the country's contingents in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
"The evaluation will definitely be carried out, especially for several sports that did not achieve the medal target," Minister Dito said in a press statement on Monday, October 9, 2023.
"The performance did not meet the expectations of the President. But according to the data, the acquisition of seven gold medals is the highest gold acquisition since [participation in the Asian Games] 1978, excluding 2018 because we were the host."
According to Dito, the evaluation is not to find out who is wrong, but to find out what is lacking so that Indonesia could improve in the next event.
With a total of 36 medals, consisting of seven gold, 11 silver and 18 bronze, Indonesia finished 13th in the Asian Games.
However, it could not be denied that the medal tally is one of the highest gold medal achievements since 45 years ago, excluding the time when Indonesia held the host status.
To date, Indonesia has participated in the Asian Games 19 times since 1951. Its best performance was at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games as host. The Merah Putih contingent won 31 gold medals and finished fourth.
