TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has just released the weather forecast for Thursday, October 5, 2023.

"Rain with lightning on Thursday is estimated to pour over Pontianak. Heavy rain will drench Banda Aceh and Medan," the forecast said as quoted from the BMKG website.

Meanwhile, medium-intensity rain is forecasted to pour over Jayapura. Light rain will drizzle over several regions, namely Bandung, Tarakan, Tanjung Pinang, Ternate, Manokwari, and Pekanbaru.

The capitals of Jambi, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, and Palembang will be shrouded in smog today.

The temperature ranges from 18 to 36 degrees Celsius with the lowest reported to hit Bandung and the highest in Semarang and Palembang.

An early warning for the effects of heavy rain is issued for Aceh, North Sumatra, West Kalimantan, and Papua.

High waves

BMKG issues an early warning for potential high waves in Indonesian waters for October 5-6, 2023.

The wind pattern in the north of Indonesia generally moves from northeast to southwest with a 6-15 knots velocity. Meanwhile, in the south, the wind generally moves from the east to northeast with a velocity ranging from 6-20 knots.

The highest velocity is observed south of Sunda Strait, south of Banten waters, Java Sea, waters south of Kalimantan, south of Makassar Strait, west of Banda Sea, and east of Arafuru Sea.

This condition caused 2.5 to 4 meters waves in Aceh to Mentawai Islands, Enggano-Bengkulu waters, Indian Ocean south of Aceh to Mentawai Islands, west of Sunda Strait, waters south of Bali to Sumba Island, south of Bali-Lombok-Alas Strait, west of Sunda Strait, and Indian Ocean south of NTB to Sumba Island.

Additionally, waves with 4 to 6 meters in height are estimated to hit waters west of Lampung, the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu to Lampung, south of Sunda Strait, waters south of Central Java to East Java, and the Indian Ocean south of Java to Bali.
