TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) conducted a further investigation on the alleged corruption case related to sugar imports committed by the Trade Ministry in 2015-2023.
Kuntadi, the Director of Investigations at the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, explained that this alleged corruption was carried out in order to fulfill the national sugar stocks and stabilize the commodity prices.
The Trade Ministry was accused of unlawfully issuing permits for the import of raw crystal sugar which was intended to be processed into white crystal sugar to unauthorized parties.
“Apart from that, the Ministry of Trade was suspected of granting import permits that exceed the maximum sugar limit required by the government,” Kuntadi added in a press conference at the Attorney General's Office, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
He confirmed that the AGO team is conducting searches at the Ministry of Trade and PT Perusahaan Dagang Indonesia (PPI), a state-owned company engaged in export, import, and distribution.
“Let's wait for the results,” Kuntadi said.
