Two Aftershocks Follow 5.3M Earthquake in West Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted South Kaimana Beach in West Papua on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 15:58:40 WIB.
"The earthquake was shallow and caused by an activity at the Tarera-Aiduna fault," The Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG Daryono said in the press release received today.
He mentioned that the earthquake has a strike-slip mechanism and was located at the sea 87 kilometers northeast of Kaimana with a 14-kilometer depth.
The quake was felt in Kaimana with a III-IV MMI intensity. No reports of damages caused by the earthquake so far.
No potential for a tsunami was recorded. Meanwhile, until 04:18 p.m. WIB, BMKG recorded two aftershocks with the biggest magnitude of 4.6.
Daryono urged affected residents to remain calm and be wary of unconfirmed information.
