National Museum Identifies 243 Collections Affected by Saturday Fire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Special Team of National Museum Management identified 243 out of 817 collections affected by the fire a couple of weeks ago. 

The Acting head of Museums and Cultural Heritage Ahmad Mahendra stated in a press conference broadcasted today that the team continues to evacuate, identify, and restore the museum collections and the historical building of the National Museum.

"The pre-historical exhibition, bronze, and parts of terracotta have been evacuated, while the ceramic collection is in the process. Additional expert personnel have also been supporting the team with the identification process. So far, 243 collections have been successfully identified," he said.

Simultaneous with the evacuation process, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology communicates intensively with domestic and foreign experts, communities, and partners to plan the recovery of the National Museum and the improvement of museum and cultural heritage qualities in general. A series of discussions and direct observations of the National Museum has been ongoing since September 23.

The recovery plan is split into several phases. After the collections are evacuated, they are documented and identified, including the identification of damages to the building of the National Museum, classified as a cultural heritage.

"The experts from National Cultural Heritage have conducted studies and analyses to recommend the management of cultural heritage to the ministry. A thorough audit of the museum consisting of architectural, structural material, security of the building, and other aspects," Mahendra concluded.
